Caffeine and cup quality are separate
Caffeine is a naturally occurring alkaloid in coffee. It affects alertness for many people, but it is not a cupping score. Specialty coffee is evaluated for attributes, sensory character, physical condition, traceability, and value—not for having more or less caffeine.
Flavor intensity can also mislead. A smoky dark roast may taste “stronger” than a floral light roast without delivering more caffeine. To estimate what you drink, start with species, dry coffee dose, brewing method, extraction, and serving size. Roast level belongs later in the analysis.
Why roast-level answers seem contradictory
Roasting removes moisture, expands the bean, and lowers its density. That makes the answer depend on measurement.
If you use a scoop, bulky dark-roasted beans may place less coffee mass into the same volume. If you use a scale, the dose is controlled by weight and the roast difference often becomes much smaller. Comparing individual beans creates another result because light-roasted beans are denser and heavier.
A 2024 filter-coffee study adds an important nuance. At the same coffee-to-water ratio, light- and medium-roast brews generally had higher caffeine concentrations than dark-roast brews. When extraction yield was held constant, the relationship could reverse. One experiment does not establish every café serving; it demonstrates why “dark always has more” is too simple.
A scoop measures volume; a scale controls coffee mass. The comparison can change the answer.
Species can matter more than roast
The International Trade Centre reports common green-bean caffeine ranges around 0.8–1.7% for arabica and 1.5–2.5% for robusta, with some robusta values higher. The ranges overlap, so robusta is not exactly twice arabica in every lot.

Decaffeinated coffee still contains a small amount. Decaf means most caffeine has been removed, not that a laboratory result must be zero.
How much is in a serving?
USDA FoodData Central lists brewed coffee at 40 milligrams per 100 grams, which works out to approximately 95 milligrams in 8 fluid ounces. Restaurant-prepared espresso is listed at 212 milligrams per 100 grams, or a little over 60 milligrams in a roughly 1-ounce serving. These are database reference values, not measurements of every café recipe.
Concentration and total serving are different. A larger filter coffee can exceed one concentrated espresso shot.
The European Food Safety Authority concluded that habitual intake up to 400 milligrams per day and single doses up to 200 milligrams generally did not raise safety concerns for healthy adults in its assessment. Individual sensitivity, medications, pregnancy, health conditions, and sleep goals can require different limits. Treat that figure as an agency reference, not personalized medical advice.
